2023 대한민국 국토대전 국토부장관상 2020 파주 광탄도서관 복합문화공간 현상설계 공모 당선 마을과 경계없는 일상 속 공간 광탄도서관 복합문화공간은 친근한 이웃집처럼 가지런한 마당을 품고 있는 일상적 삶의 공간이다. 마당은 마치 한옥의 안마당처럼 삶의 다양한 활동들의 배경이 되어주고，건물과 마을의 경계를 느슨하게 풀어 놓는다. 마을로 열려진 동시에 아늑한 분위기의 내，외부 공간에서 마을주민들은 자유롭게 책을 읽거나 커피를 마시면서 사색에 잠기거나 담소를 나눈다. 목적에 얽매이지 않고 기분 좋고 편하게 머물고 싶은 장소를 만드는 것을 본 계획의 주요한 과제로 보았고，그래서 비워져 다양한 활동들로 채워질 수 있는 마당을 먼저 배치하고 계획을 시작하였다. 마당 품은 복합문화 도서관 주변 지역의 첫인상처럼 도서관과의 만남도 조급하거나 급격하지 않고 점진적이다. 방문객는 나무그림자가 아롱지는 마당으로 먼저 들어서게 된다. 마당에는 자그마한 나무가 있는데，오랜 세월이 지나면서 점차 마을의 정자목으로 자라나길 기대하며 고른 회화나무다. 바닥의 붉은 바닥점토벽돌은 반뜻한 마당에 적당한 활기를 불어넣고，데크 필로티로 구획된 안쪽 마당은 초화류로 조성되어 싱그러운 느낌을 준다. 마당과 면한 내부실은 지역주민과 인근 학생들을 위한 다양한 행사나 전시，소공연 등이 열리는 마주침공간과 다목적실인데 폴딩도어가 설치되어 마당과 연계되고 확장된다. 마당은 접지면에만 있는 것이 아니라 2,3층에도 다양한 크기로 자리잡고 있고，모든 마당들은 내부와 연결되어 쉽게 드나들 수 있다. 내，외부 순환동선 건물 출입구와 도로，마당은 일직선으로 배치하지 않고，데크 필로티 하부에서 살짝 꺾어서 진입토록 계획하였다. 내부로 바로 들어가지 말고，마당에서 한 호홉 쉬면서 바쁜 일상을 조금 멀어내고 여유롭게 들어가면 좋겠다는 생각이었다. 마당에서 출입구로 발걸음을 돌리면 자연스레 안쪽마당의 앙증맞은 초화류들이 눈길을 맞이한다. 방문객은 또다른 선택지로 외부계단을 이용할 수도 있다. 1층 마당에서 시작되는 외부계단은 2층 마당을 거쳐 3층 차양 있는 마당까지 방문객을 이끌게 된다. 넓게 펼쳐진 공간 광탄도서관은 작지는 않지만 크지도 않은 다소 애매한 규모의 도서관이다. 척박한 문화환경의 지역주민들에게 주어진 규모내에서 가능한 넓고 여유롭게 펼쳐진 공간이 제공되면 좋을 것 같았다. 그래서 2층의 종합열람실은 햇살좋은 남향을 향해 부지 폭만큼 동서로 길게 펼쳐져 있다. 내부의 시선은 넓은 창을 통하여 마당과 사계절을 느낄 수 있는 수목들로 확장되어，실제 규모보다 더 큰 여유로움을 느낄 수 있다. 또한 공간은 전면도로로부터 벽체，마당，열람실，아트리움，코아의 순으로 솔리드와 보이드가 켜켜이 교차 배치되어 있는데，이것은 실폭이 깊은 내부 안쪽까지 자연광을 들이고，방문객에게 내，외부 또는 수평，수직공간을 관통하는 공간적 체험을 준다. A Daily Space without Boundaries with the Village Much like a welcoming neighbor's home, the Gwangtan Library Complex Cultural Space serves as an everyday space featuring a well-arranged courtyard. Similar to the inner courtyards of traditional Korean Hanok homes, this yard provides a backdrop for various activities while also softening the boundaries between the building and the local community. Both its internal and external spaces offer a cozy atmosphere, opening up to the village. Here, residents are free to read books, sip coffee, indulge in contemplation, or share conversations. The main goal of this design was to create a space not bound strictly by its purpose, where visitors could feel comfortable and at ease. This is why the courtyard was positioned first in the planning, designed to be versatile enough to host a range of activities. The Library as a Complex Cultural Space Embracing a Courtyard Much like the initial impression one forms of the surrounding area, the experience with the library unfolds gradually, rather than abruptly. Upon arrival, visitors first step into a courtyard dappled with the shade of a tree. This small tree is a carefully chosen locust, planted with the hope that over time it will grow to become a landmark tree in the community. The courtyard is neatly paved with red clay bricks, injecting just the right amount of vitality into the space. Separated by deck pilotis, the inner courtyard is adorned with herbaceous plants, offering a refreshing ambiance. Adjacent to the courtyard are multipurpose indoor spaces. These include a meeting area and a venue for various events, exhibitions, and intimate performances. These rooms feature folding doors, allowing for easy expansion and integration with the courtyard. Importantly, courtyards are not exclusive to the ground level; they also occupy spaces on the 2nd and 3rd floors in various sizes. All of these courtyards are easily accessible and connected to the indoor spaces, providing a seamless integration of the library’s various levels. Inner and Outer Circulation Routes The building's entrance, the adjacent road, and the courtyard are not aligned in a straight line. Instead, the layout was designed to guide visitors into the space through a slight turn beneath the deck pilotis. This was done with the intention that visitors could pause in the courtyard for a moment, momentarily shedding the stress of daily life before entering the building. As visitors direct their steps from the courtyard towards the entrance, they are naturally greeted by the sight of charming herbaceous plants in the inner courtyard. An alternative route is also available: guests can choose to ascend an external staircase. This staircase originates from the ground-floor courtyard and leads visitors upwards through the second-floor courtyard and ultimately to a third-floor courtyard equipped with an awning. Expansive Open Spaces The Gwangtan Library occupies a somewhat ambiguous size: it's neither small nor large. Given the limited cultural resources available to the local community, it seemed important to offer as expansive and relaxing a space as possible within the given dimensions. With this in mind, the general reading room on the second floor stretches longitudinally from east to west, facing south to maximize natural light. From within, the eye is drawn through large windows to the courtyard and its seasonal foliage, creating a sense of openness and expansiveness that exceeds the actual dimensions of the building. Additionally, the architecture is structured in a series of alternating solids and voids—from the external wall to the courtyard, the reading room, the atrium, and finally the core. This design choice allows natural light to penetrate deep into the interior, despite its narrow width. It also provides visitors with a varied spatial experience, inviting them to move seamlessly between interior and exterior spaces as well as traverse both horizontal and vertical dimensions.
